What a Kitchen Window Teaches

Field Notes · 6 min read

The window over a kitchen sink is the most watched frame in most houses. Nobody hangs it, nobody composes it, and yet it gets more attention over a year than any picture on the wall. What it shows is rarely remarkable. That is the point.

The same view, slowly changing

Looking at one ordinary scene every day turns you into an unwitting naturalist. You learn which tree leafs out first, which neighbour leaves early, how the light moves along a fence between March and June.

Boredom is a kind of attention

A view you cannot change is a view you eventually start to read. The plain middle of a week is where most of a life happens, and noticing it is a skill that improves with practice rather than scenery.

Keep the sill clear

Whatever the window looks onto, it works better with nothing in front of it. A clear sill is a cheap luxury, and it costs only the willingness to put things away.

A view you cannot change is a view you eventually start to read.
